Job Summary

Techstars is looking for a Senior Research Analyst who will help lead the analytics and research function in support of the Techstars Ecosystem Development Program globally. The role is an integral part of the Techstars Ecosystem Development team, working closely with consultants, directors, and executives as we enhance the conditions for advanced startup ecosystem growth for our city/metro clients.

The Senior Research Analyst will have five primary areas of responsibility:

  • Develop and maintain quantitative models, databases, and the latest thinking;
  • Work with local teams to provide data collection and analytics support;
  • Design and implement strategies and platforms to systematically measure impact;
  • Lead and/or support various thought-leadership initiatives; and
  • Support the Ecosystem Development team as needed

The Senior Research Analyst has overall daily ownership of this aspect of our product. Working in concert with the Techstars Ecosystem Development team and the Techstars Ecosystem Development framework, the Senior Research Analyst will help outline a vision, develop priorities, and measure the impact of our efforts aligned with the specific requirements of the engagement.

This is both an external- and an internal-facing role. To that end, it is incumbent on the candidate to seamlessly switch the focus without losing momentum. Lastly, as a member of the overall Techstars team, the Senior Research Analyst will interface with other Techstars team members, attend staff meetings, and participate in company events as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain quantitative models, databases, and the latest thinking for ecosystem assessment and pre-assessment;
  • Work with local engagement teams and research partners to ensure that data collection and processing, analytics, and strategic insight needs are met;
  • Manage the quantitative aspects of product development and strategy, including database management, and survey and experiment design and implementation, and the development of a measurement platform, among other activities;
  • Lead and/or support various research and thought-leadership initiatives that share program learnings externally and advance our mission to advance thinking around startup ecosystem development and measurement;
  • Support the Ecosystem Development team as needed; and
  • Keep alignment with the Techstars' vision, direction, and support of the overall organization objectives.


You must have...

  • A demonstrated love of data and analytics, an intellectual curiosity, and a desire to constantly learn and grow;
  • A high level of proficiency in programming languages for statistical analysis (eg, R, Stata,), data science (eg, Python, SQL/NoSQL, APIs/Postman), and visualization (eg Tableau, JavaScript); or at least a high-level proficiency in many of these things with a willingness to learn others;
  • Experience applying technical skills in a quantitative environment; demonstrated ability to pose researchable questions and test hypotheses; design surveys and extract insights independently;
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team; possess a congenial disposition, an entrepreneurial spirit, a sense of humor, and have comfort in an informal work environment; and
  • A conviction that entrepreneurs create a better future and a desire to support our mission to help entrepreneurs succeed.

You probably also have...
  • Subject matter knowledge, experience, and interest in entrepreneurship, venture capital, technology, economics, public policy, or business strategy;
  • Knowledge and experience working with existing data sources in economics and policy (eg, World Bank, OECD), and startups and venture capital (eg, PitchBook, Crunchbase), at the local, national, and international levels;
  • Approximately 3-5 years of work experience in a quantitative/research role, and at least one university degree in a quantitative discipline;
  • Experience interest in building data products, processes, and dashboards;
  • A professional network of analysts, academics, entrepreneurs, investors, or others engaged with or in support of high-impact entrepreneurship; and
  • A desire to become an authority on the strategies and measurement approaches to better understand and improve entrepreneurial ecosystems worldwide.
