Summary:

The Light Vehicle Operator performs responsibilities involving the operation of a motor vehicle to transport a variety of items, materials, and/or personnel. This includes routine work involving the operation of vehicles such as a passenger car, station wagon, light fork lift, pick-up truck up to one ton, panel truck or van to transport or haul a variety of items, deliver messages, perform errands, and transport passengers.

Essential Job Functions: (not limited to duties as described - performs related duties as requested)

  • Operates a motor vehicle picking up and delivering such items as mail, small parts and equipment, or other cargo; transports employees, project officials, and clients; delivers messages and performs various errands.
  • Base Taxi Service- Taxi drivers are responsible for utilizing a vehicle to pick up passengers from a specified location and quickly and safely deliver them to their drop-off destination. They are expected to provide professional and courteous service to all passengers. Ensures passengers have a safe riding experience. Drivers are responsible for cleanliness and performing routine checks on their vehicle, such as measurement of fluid levels and tire inspection and reporting any problems.
  • Airfield Sweeping- The Airfield Sweeper Operator maintains and operates sweeper on airfields and streets to maintain an acceptable appearance and cleanliness level and to prevent foreign object damage (FOD) on airfield pavements.
  • Base Property Disposal Division- Performs work to dispose of excess property to include property re-utilization, donation. and or recycling practices. Responsible for receiving property against proper turn in document, loading and unloading property, using lift truck and light forklift, and preparing property for shipment to various locations.
  • Snow Removal Operations- A snow plow operator's central duty is to operate a snowplow or tractor with a plow to clear snow from the roadways. This often involves going out late at night or early in the morning to clear snow since precipitation is unpredictable and roads need to be cleared before rush hour traffic hits. Plows also commonly have spreaders on the back that are used to release salt and sand onto the roads as you drive to prevent build-up or freezing.
  • Performs associated clerical and record keeping tasks; loads and performs necessary handling operations in connection with cargo being hauled.
    • Dispatches government vehicle's and equipment from the motor pool.
    • Answers phones and retrieves messages for general motor pool info; dispatches for base taxi services.
    • Maintains Government key log for all vehicles as needed. Tracks vehicle mileage and reports any discrepancies.
  • Makes minor adjustments and emergency repairs. Keeps vehicles clean and serviceable.
  • Checks oil and fluid levels as appropriate.
  • Documents vehicle mileage and condition.

Licenses & Certifications:

Must posses a valid Maryland driver's license.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent with 3 years experience as a Light Vehicle Operator.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the techniques of safe vehicle operation, and traffic laws and regulations.
  • Must possess the skills necessary to operate light vehicles, lift or handle cargo, and obtain a light forklift operators' certification.
