Primary Job Function:

The R&D Program Manager will represent R&D on Core Teams to Execute programs achieving cost, time and technical goals. This role will be the aligning leader to represent all of R&D on major cross functional programs for developing new medical devices from concept through commercialization. The ideal candidate must flourish in a matrix organization, with program leadership coming from the Core Team Leader.

    A Day in the Life:

    Core Team Responsibilities:

  • Manages R&D program focused on new Instrumentation system development.

  • Works with engineering team to establish program goals, timelines, milestones and budget.

  • Leads and ensures achievement of project objectives and milestones with initially complex or undetermined outcomes.

  • Represent all of R&D to bring one voice to Core Team, maintaining alignment and managing execution across R&D disciplines.

  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.

  • Develop and maintain R&D functional strategies, plans and schedules to meet project goals and manage risks; lead execution of tasks and management of issues/exceptions.

  • Communicate key program information to ensure Core Team and R&D leadership engagement and alignment.

  • Proactively provide input and judgement to influence best path forward, staying informed and aware to act, communicate and adjust during project execution.

  • Establish and maintain close relationships with all functions to develop and communicate project strategies and identify issues/resolutions

    R&D Leader Responsibilities:

  • Lead extended R&D team to execute technical development through Medtronic stage gate NPD process, responsible for planning, initiating, monitoring, tracking and prioritizing program activities to successful completion, on time and on budget.

  • Empower team members to support the development and achievement of project goals; coach and support project neem members for execution excellence.

  • Leverage Predictable Development approaches for functional excellence, lessons-learned and champion DRM, VOC, etc., to implement risk burn downs and ensure effective executions through transfer to Post-Market status.

  • Ensure R&D Design Control so that all engineering deliverables are met across project scope through all phases.

  • Lead Technical and Design Reviews for R&D Function, and coordinate Phase Reviews with CTL and Core Team to gain engagement across functions, gather input for design teams and obtain readiness for next phase.

  • Use Effective Communication Strategies to deliver accurate and efficient R&D communication and documentation through all phases to commercial release.

  • Plan and manage program resource allocation and budget for function.

  • Ensure compliance with design control, PD and Quality processes, as well as external Regulatory requirements.

  • Identify, deploy and monitor appropriate SME's to ensure technical competency meets project needs.

  • Create and track information flow and metrics that will inform you of progress toward goal.

  • Possess sufficient technical competency in Systems, software/hardware, mechanical, requirements flow down, Human Factors to ensure best practices are applied, to assess progress and to make preventive course corrections.

  • Lead development and execution of engineering strategy, including components, builds, testing, documentation and change management.

    Required:

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems or Biomedical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline

  • Minimum 12 years of career engineering experience with at least 5 years in project management or lead engineering roles within a medical device field

  • Proven communication skills and ability to lead within a multi-functional team environment

  • A demonstrated capacity for developing and commercializing innovation

    Nice to Have:

  • Familiar with IEC 60601, IEC 62304, IEC 62366, UL, ANSI and ASTM standards

  • Familiar with product cyber security, EU MDR and RoHS

  • Core Team Member Experience with a track record of successful product launches in the medical device industry

  • MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems or Biomedical Engineering or other related engineering discipline

  • A background in cryoablation or other ablation technologies

  • Experience developing electro-mechanical devices employing real-time embedded systems

  • An understanding of clinical/technical applications of ablation products and application related physiology

  • Knowledge of Design for Reliability (DfR), Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), Design for Serviceability, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Lean Sigma (DFLS) and/or robust design practices

  • PMP or other project management certification
