Safety Attendant Job Duties


Confined Space Attendant (Holewatch):


  • Check the permit to insure it is complete and accurate before allowing entry

  • Check the atmosphere of the confined space (using a 4 or 5 gas atmospheric monitor) before allowing entry

  • Make sure the entrants are wearing the PPE listed on the permit before allowing entry

  • Sign all entrants in/out of the confined space

  • Keep communication with the entrants at all times while they are in the confined space

  • Continuously monitor the atmosphere inside of the confined space

  • Immediately evacuate the entrants should a hazardous condition occur inside or outside of the confined space

  • Immediately contact the rescue team (using a radio or other approved site method) should an entrant become injured inside of the confined space

  • Never leave the confined space as long as the entrants are inside of the confined space

  • Insure all entrants have exited the confined space, and sign them out on the entry log, before leaving for lunch/break or shift change

  • Monitor the expiration time of the permit and evacuate the entrants should the permit expire

Firewatch:


  • Check the permit to insure it is complete and accurate before allowing hot work to begin

  • Make sure the area is free of trash and other combustibles

  • Monitor the area with an LEL monitor before allowing hot work to begin

  • Make sure all drains are covered

  • Maintain a barricade if required

  • Have a fire extinguisher and/or charged water hose before allowing work to begin

  • Monitor the combustible source of the hot work to insure it is not in danger of causing a fire

  • Maintain spark containment if required

  • Monitor the surrounding area to insure there are no hazardous conditions that could harm the workers performing the hot work

  • Immediately evacuate the workers should a hazardous condition occur within the vicinity of the hot work area

  • Immediately contact the rescue team/fire brigade (using a radio or other approved site method) should an worker become injured or should a fire occur

  • Never leave the hot work area as long as hot work is being performed and for 30 minutes after the completion of the work

  • Monitor the expiration time of the permit and stop the work should the permit expire

Bottlewatch:


  • Check the permit to insure it is complete and accurate before allowing work to begin

  • Make sure the bottles are placed up-wind of the fresh air work

  • Make sure the hoses are run so they can not be damaged by traffic or other work being performed in the area

  • Make sure the area is properly barricaded

  • Establish a method of communication with the employees performing the fresh-air work

  • Monitor the gauges on the bottles to insure air volume does not drop below the acceptable limits and monitor air flow to the workers masks

  • Monitor the surrounding area to insure there are no hazardous conditions that could harm the workers performing the fresh air work

  • Immediately evacuate the workers should a hazardous condition occur within in the vicinity of the fresh air work

  • Immediately contact the rescue team/fire brigade (using a radio or other approved site method) should an worker become injured or should a emergency occur

  • Never leave the fresh air bottles and gauges as long as the fresh air work is in progress

  • Maintain communication with the employees performing the fresh air work

  • Monitor the expiration time of the permit and stop the work should the permit expire.
